Charity is over the moon after web win

Jul 30 2012 by Jeff Holmes, Paisley Daily Express  MORE people who suffer from multiple sclerosis will be able to switch on to the services provided by a Paisley charity after it won a new £10,000 website.

Revive MS Support, which operates an outreach centre in the town, scooped the unusual prize in a competition run by leading web design firm Mercurytide.

The software development company organised the contest to celebrate their 10th anniversary and invited members of the public to nominate their favourite charity.

After receiving over 400 nominations for different charitable organisations, Mercurytide were delighted to announce Revive MS Support as the winners and they will now receive a website to the value of £10,000.

Cara Doran, of Revive MS Support, told the Paisley Daily Express:
“It is an amazing feeling to have won such a high-profile competition. The staff and trustees at Revive are over the moon. We were jumping about the office when we heard the good news. This will make a massive difference to how we communicate with our clients and supporters online and will make it much easier for people to engage with our services and fundraising events. Thank you so much to everyone from Mercurytide. This prize is so much appreciated.”

Three runner-up charities will each receive a day’s free consultation to help them develop their marketing, social media and search engine optimisation strategies.

Bosses at Mercurytide said the standard of entries was extremely high.

Tamlin Roberts, who is managing director of Mercurytide and was one of the competition judges, visited the Revive MS Support offices to learn more about the charity’s work.

He said: “I was struck by how individual in nature MS is, how it affects different people in different ways and how Revive MS Support have helped MS sufferers get the most from life. I am really pleased that such a worthy cause has won our competition and we can now be a small part of the great work that they do.”

Mercurytide have developed solutions for a wide range of clients, both in the UK and around the world, from the construction industry to the hospitality industry and from small brochure websites to complex management systems and mobile apps.

Multiple sclerosis: World's highest rate in Orkney Islands

To contact us Click HERE

Brain scan of MS patient
Scotland's Orkney Islands have the highest rate of multiple sclerosis (MS) in the world, according to a major new study.
Researchers said that the rate for probable or definite MS was now 402 per 100,000 people, up from a previous 309 per 100,000 which was recorded in 1974.

Teams at the universities of Edinburgh and Aberdeen carried out the study. They are now trying to work out why the figure in Orkney is so high, but believe genes could play a key role. With MS, the protective layer around nerves, known as the myelin sheath, becomes damaged.

Messages from the brain to the rest of the body are disrupted, resulting in difficulty moving, muscle weakness and blurred vision.

There are many suspected risk factors, and the disease is known to be more common away from the equator.

MS affects about 100,000 people in the UK. The new study found that one in 170 Orcadian women suffer from the condition. The current figure for Orkney compares to 295 per 100,000 in Shetland and 229 per 100,000 in Aberdeen.

'So high' Dr Jim Wilson, of the University of Edinburgh's Centre for Population Health Sciences, said: "Our study shows that Orkney has the highest prevalence rate of MS recorded worldwide.

"These findings may reflect improved diagnostic methods, improved survival or rising incidence.

"We are trying to work out why it is so high, but it is at least partly to do with genes."

It has previously been noted that areas of high MS prevalence around the world have been settled in by Scottish immigrants. Previous studies have shown high rates of MS in Canada and Scandinavia. The new study is published in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry.

Sub story for Partick Thistle keeper Fox

Scott FoxPressure drop ... Revive MS Support chief Iain Morrison keeps Fox and Welsh in the oxygen chamberRONNIE MacKAY reports Published: 26thDecember 2012

SCOTT FOX can breathe more easily now he is restored to full fitness for Partick Thistle.

The keeper tore a thigh muscle in the 5-1 league win over Dunfermline in November.
He revealed that his return to the Jags line-up is ahead of schedule — after undergoing oxygen therapy.
The former Celtic goalie tried the unusual treatment along with crocked team-mate Sean Welsh.
Fox now hopes he is walking on air with the Jags as they look to stay top of the First Division today against Morton.
Fox said: “It was like a dome chamber — a bit like the inside of a submarine.
“It is about getting clean oxygen through your body to help any damage you have.
“I had a couple of treatments with Sean and I just wanted to do something to help my recovery.
“Ian Maxwell and our physio Kenny Crichton came up with the idea and I was completely open-minded about it.
“You sit inside the chamber and your ears pop as they clear out all the old air and pump in the clean oxygen.
“It is strange sitting with a mask on in a confined area but you just get used to it.
“You never know with these things but I am a lot better now and have been training for the last few weeks.
“I have basically halved the time I was expected to get back and just need to make the muscles in my kicking leg stronger.
“But I am in the squad for the Morton game and I am ready to play if called upon.”
Fox admitted the injury came at the wrong moment for him, but the pain hasn’t been as bad as it could have been with Jackie McNamara’s side remaining on a roll. He said: “We were flying when I got injured but the boys have kept up the results. If we had been losing games then I might have felt I had been letting everyone down.
“But we are doing well and are still top of the league.”
Former Motherwell keeper Graeme Smith has stepped in and Fox knows he faces a battle to oust Buzz for a place between the sticks.
Fox said: “It is good to have the competition with Graeme and we are both competitive.
“He has been great to work with and he has been pushing me on. Hopefully I am pushing him on too.”
Thistle are two points ahead of Dunfermline and three ahead of the Morton side who visit Firhill today.
Fox is hoping they can keep up their 100 per cent home league record as they are currently eight for eight this season.
He added: “The players are showing a lot of character right now and we are on a great run.
“I think the difference between now and last season is the confidence.
“When things went wrong for us last season, some of the boys would go into a shell.
“But this season, if something goes wrong, they are big enough to get through it.
“Winning games breeds confidence and we know we are going to get goals.
“The back five know if they can keep the back door shut then they can let the midfield and strikers go and get the goals.”

Inhibitory Activity of Surfactin, Produced by Different Bacillussubtilis Subsp. subtilis Strains, Against Listeria Monocytogenes Sensitive and Bacteriocin-ResistantStrainsMicrobiol Res, 2012 Dec 19Three surfactin-producing Bacillus subtilis strains, C4, M1and G2III, previously isolated from honey and intestines from the Apismellifera L. bee, were phylogenetically characterized at sub-species level asB. subtilis subsp. subtilis using gyrA gene sequencing. The antagonistic effectof surfactin was studied against seven different Listeria monocytogenesstrains, 6 of which were resistant to bacteriocins. Surfactin showedanti-Listeria activity against all 7 strains and a dose of 0.125mg/mL ofsurfactin was enough to inhibit this pathogen. Surfactin sintetized by B.subtilis subsp. subtilis C4 inhibited the pathogen in lower concentrations,0.125mg/mL, followed by G2III and M1 with 0.25 and 1mg/mL, respectively. Inparticular, a dose of 0.125mg/mL reduced the viability of L. monocytogenes99/287 RB6, a bacteriocin-resistant strain, to 5 log orders. Surfactin assayedmaintained anti-Listeria activity within a pH range of between 2 and 10, afterheat treatment (boiling for 10min and autoclaving at 121°C for 15min) and aftertreatment with proteolytic enzymes. These results suggest that surfactin can beused as a new tool for prevention and the control of L. monocytogenes indifferent environments, for example, in the food industry.

Its reported effectiveness includes improvement of stiff neck andsensitivity to cold in women. On the other hand, RJ has been considered to negativelyaffect breast cancer in some areas of China. In this study, we evaluated theeffect of RJ on breast cancer cells in vitro and in vivo.MethodRJ and protease-treated RJ (pRJ) were analyzed by LC/MSfor the presence of the three estrogens estrone, estradiol, and estriol. Therate of proliferation of estrogen-responsive human breast cancer MCF-7 cells stimulatedwith estradiol in the presence of RJ and pRJ (30, 100, 300 μg/mL) wasdetermined by the AlamarBlue cell proliferation assay after 6 days of culture. In vivo, RJ and pRJ (1000 mg/kg p.o.) were administered daily to female SCIDmice transplanted with MCF-7 cells and treated with estradiol (0.5 mg/kg/di.p.) for 56 days as a model for the estrogen status in women. The effect onMCF-7 tumor growth was studied by measuring changes in the tumor volume.Tamoxifen, a medicinal substance for estrogen receptor positive breast cancer, was used as a positive control.Result and Discussion No estrogen was detected in the RJor pRJ (limit of quantification : estron < 2 ppb; estradiol, estriol < 5ppb). The proliferation rate of MCF-7 cells was not promoted by the combinationof RJ or pRJ with estradiol. In mice administered estradiol for all of the testperiod, neither RJ nor pRJ significantly increased the MCF-7 tumor volume ascompared to the controls. Tamoxifen showed significant inhibition of MCF-7 cellproliferation and tumor growth. In conclusion, these results show that RJ andpRJ are free of estrogens and do not promote the proliferation of breast cancercells in vitro and in vivo. Thus, RJ is regarded as a highly safe food, andfurther study of its mechanisms of action and beneficial effects are ongoing.______________________________________________Corresponding author, E-mailht0807@yamada-bee.com蜂王浆ä¸å«æœ‰é›Œæ€§æ¿€ç´ ,并且ä¸会促进å°鼠体内MCF-7 乳腺癌细胞的增殖XIA Hai-Ou 1, ZHAO Yue 2, NIU Kai-jun 3, Hiroko Tani 4, KenHashimoto 4(1.

Multiple sclerosis: World's highest rate in Orkney Islands

Brain scan of MS patient
Scotland's Orkney Islands have the highest rate of multiple sclerosis (MS) in the world, according to a major new study.
Researchers said that the rate for probable or definite MS was now 402 per 100,000 people, up from a previous 309 per 100,000 which was recorded in 1974.

A Scientist and MS Patient's Quest for a Cure

To contact us Click HERE
article provided by Barbara S., in Delray Beach, Fl.

Diagnosed at 21, this Ohio researcher is determined to help find an MS cure. Knowing he'd be helping others with multiple sclerosis is his great motivator.

By Beth W. OrensteinMedically reviewed by Farrokh Sohrabi, MD
Dale Edberg was a junior, sitting in biochemistry class at the University of Minnesota Duluth, when suddenly he couldn’t see in front of him. “I was watching the overheads that they used back then and started going blind,” he recalls. “It was pretty scary.” Edberg, now 42, was experiencing optic neuritis, which is often a precursor to multiple sclerosis (MS).

Mary Hughes Is on the Hunt for a Cure for MS

An MRI and other symptoms, which Edberg had been ignoring, led doctors to confirm he had multiple sclerosis. And because of one symptom — chronic fatigue — Edberg had already changed his undergraduate major from premed to biochemistry. After graduation, Edberg decided to pursue a PhD in biochemistry at Washington State University. As a doctoral candidate, he says, he did some exciting research on breast cancer, but once he had his PhD, he knew he wanted to turn his attention to the disease he knew personally. “I wanted to pursue my passion and do MS research,” he says.Edberg interviewed for a job with Moses Rodriguez M.D.’s small MS research lab at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., and was hired on the spot. He spent five years with Dr. Rodriguez studying myelin, a fatty substance that surrounds nerve fibers and acts as insulation. In people with MS, myelin becomes damaged or destroyed and distorts the nerve impulses that travel to and from the brain and spinal cord. “The mystery of MS is why this occurs in some people,” Edberg says. The body can repair some myelin naturally, but in those with MS, the remyelination process is never complete, Edberg says. His goal is to find a way to repair myelin damage and recover nerve function lost by people with MS. Finding a way to protect myelin and prevent further damage could lead to a cure for MS, he says. After the Mayo Clinic, Edberg spent a year researching myelin at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. About three years ago, he took a new job as a researcher at Renovo Neural Inc., also in Cleveland. The company is helping pharmaceutical companies test and develop drugs that promote myelin repair.

On the Hunt for an MS Cure

MS researchers have had a lot of success over the past two decades. “There are now nine therapeutics for MS, and more are in the pipeline," Edberg says. "There is no other disease out there that has had such breakthroughs in the last 20 years. I say it’s an exciting time to be diagnosed with MS because there is a lot more hope than ever.”Having MS makes his work and his hope of finding an MS cure more meaningful than anyone could imagine, Edberg says. “It’s incredibly motivating to go to work every day and to be working on something that has touched every part of your life," he says. "How incredible it is to know that you’re doing research that could bring a better understanding of the disease that you have and the potential to repair the damage of the disease. You know how much the research is going to mean to end this disease.”    Continue Reading

The week between Christmas and New Year’s is a time of reflection and resolutions.   This year we reflect on loved ones we lost, the horror of a madman’s heinous act and the ferociousness of Mother Nature.  We think of an endless presidential campaign, a global economic crisis and the media’s misinterpretation of the Mayan calendar’s prediction to the end of the world.A significant occasion to me was having three women accept The Nobel Peace Prize; women who exemplify a, as the Committee says, “..non-violent struggle for the safety of women and for women’s rights to full participation in peace-building work.”This is also the time of year I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis; a daunting discovery to be unveiled at the tender age of twenty-six.  I don’t remember the exact date; it’s not an anniversary to celebrate.  Yet when the holidays roll around I celebrate how my diagnosis empowered me to turn adversity into strength, strength into action, and action into good deeds.  Writing and advocating for others is what I’ll cherish about 2012.  It’s my personal Nirvana. This final 2012 post from An Empowered Spirit offers thought-provoking quotes to enrich, enlighten and empower your life.  May your New Year be filled with endless possibilities and may many blessings come your way.Thank you for being a part of my journey.  I look forward to discussing more Second Chapter issues to bring us all even better tomorrows, together, in 2013.  Namaste.H “The way is not in the sky. Sometimes, Christmas dreams really do come true — and it can be particularly sweet if that dream is on somebody else’s behalf.
Just ask Vivian O’Connor, who put out a call recently to help a fellow multiple sclerosis sufferer obtain a tilting wheelchair.
On Tuesday, O’Connor reported that area residents opened their hearts after reading about her appeal in The NEWS — to the point where she feels the need to say, stop!
The appeal was for Dean Jesperson, who is badly affected by MS to the point where he is bent over, meaning he is sometimes unable to either breath or eat properly.
O’Connor, who uses a tilting wheelchair to get around, knew that a tilting model for Jesperson could make a big difference in his quality of life. She made an appeal for a tilting chair through the newspaper and was more than gratified by the result.
“We put out the appeal and people just started calling in,” she said. “I was getting anonymous donations, a couple of them for $500. My daughter’s workplace had a big bottle at the side where people could put donations in for him and another friend had a bake sale, while another had a party and charged $5 to get in and ended up with $1,000. People in The Gardens were phoning up to ask what they can do and St. Stephen’s Church gave money, too.”
Even as the donations rolled in however, O’Connor received a phone call that put her campaign over the top.
“Right out of the blue, Motion Specialties, the ones that deal with my wheelchair, phoned and said there was a man who was going to donate a chair,” she said. “It has a tilt on it.”
With the chair secured, O’Connor said the funds raised — about $4,000 —will be used to outfit it with extras, such as a new cushion for the seat.
“All those extra things are so expensive,” she said. “Now, we don’t need any more. Anything else he needs for the chair we can purchase.”
The experience, she said, has given her a warm, seasonal glow.
