Glasgow Rocks basketball outfit prepares to make new home at Commonwealth Sports Arena

Monday, 03 September 2012By Tom Degun

Commonwealth Sports_Arena_2_SeptSeptember 3 - Glasgow Rocks basketball team is poised set to move into the city's new Commonwealth Sports Arena next month with its curtain-raising game scheduled for October 7.

The 5,000-capacity venue (pictured top) is part of a giant £100 million ($159 million/€126 million) complex built for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games and sits adjacent to the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, host venue for cycling.

The Rocks is one of the leading franchises in the British Basketball League (BBL) and the only team to be based outside England.

Its current home is Glasgow's Kelvin Hall and the team will play its final match at there on September 9 when a USA Select squad visits.

The Rocks' first match at the Commonwealth Arena, to be officially opened at the beginning of next month, will be against arch-rivals Newcastle Eagles.

"Our scheduled move to the brand new Commonwealth Arena in the East End [of the city] has really given us all something to look forward to and everyone associated with the club is expecting 2012/13 to be a very memorable season for us," said Glasgow Rocks general manager Daniel Bajwoluk.

The Arena, owned by Glasgow City Council, is located in Dalmarnock alongside the development that will become the Athletes' Village for the Commonwealth Games.

Among its key features is a top- class 200-metre indoor athletics track that can be hydraulically lifted from below the main floor.

Both before and after the Games the venue will serve as a community facility boasting 12 badminton courts within three sports halls, dance and fitness studios, external multi-court areas, event control and hospitality suites.

Sportscotland, the country's national agency for sport, will make the venue its new headquarters.
