Improving Antibiotic Activity against Wound Pathogens withManuka Honey In Vitro
PLoS ONE 7(9): Published on September 26, 2012Following the discovery of synergistic action betweenoxacillin and manuka honey against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, this study was undertaken to search for further synergistic combinations ofantibiotics and honey that might have potential in treating wounds. Fifteen antibiotics were tested with and without sublethalconcentrations of manuka honey against each of MRSA and Pseudomonas aeruginosausing disc diffusion, broth dilution, E strip, chequerboard titration andgrowth curves. Five novel antibiotic and manuka honey combinations werefound that improved antibacterial effectiveness in vitro and these offer a newavenue of future topical treatments for wound infections caused by these twoimportant pathogens.

By Natural News | October 8, 2012 Lots of us may like to use a little honey as a sweetener forour morning coffee, toast or tea, but there are several uses for this tastylittle treat - in its pure, raw, non-pasteurized form, it can do more than justbring a smile to our face.Manuka honey as the new 'superfood.' What is Manuka honey, scientifically known as Leptospermum Scoparium?Well, it is honey that is produced by bees that pollinateManuka trees, which grow almost exclusively in the East Cape region of NewZealand. Paying Lip Service to a New Buzz About Cold SoresBusiness Day, 20/10/2012Like the common cold, there is no cure for common coldsores. Also known as fever blisters, cold sores are small, painful blister thatappear on lips and the skin around them. They are caused by the contagious herpes simplex virus thatis closely related to the one that causes genital herpes.Dermatologists say cold sores often recur in response tostress or a weakened immune system, and are best treated as soon as they appearwith antiviral medications.A new one on the market is an Australian product calledpropovir. It contains a patented extract of propolis, a naturally occurringsubstance that is collected by honey bees (Apis mellifera) from various plantsources. It has been used for over 2000 years as traditional medicine, saysSteven Mann, marketing manager of Mentholatum, the company that has brought theproduct to SA.Propovir has evidence to show that it can speed up thelesion healing process by up to four days, and to reduce pain, significantly, says Mann…

First Report of Royal Jelly Peptide’s Antibacterial Mechanism Against Gram-Positive Bacteria

Mechanism of Action of Recombinant Acc-Royalisin from RoyalJelly of Asian Honeybee against Gram-Positive BacteriaPLoS ONE, 7(10): e47194The antibacterial activity of royalisin, an antimicrobialpeptide from the royal jelly produced by honeybees, has been addressedextensively. However, its mechanism of action remains unclear. In this study, a recombinant royalisin, RAcc-royalisin fromthe royal jelly of Asian honeybee Apis cerana cerana, was expressed by fusingwith glutathione S-transferase (GST) in Escherichia coli BL21, isolated andpurified. The agar dilution assays with inhibition zone showed thatRAcc-royalisin, similar to nisin, inhibits the growth of Gram-positivebacteria. The antibacterial activity of RAcc-royalisin was associatedwith its concentration, and was weakened by heat treatment ranging from 55°C to85°C for 15 min. Both RAcc-royalisin and nisin exhibited the minimum inhibitoryconcentrations (MIC) of 62.5 µg/ml, 125 µg/ml, and 250 µg/ml againstGram-positive bacterial strains, Bacillus subtilis and Micrococcus flavus andStaphyloccocus aureus in the microplate assay, respectively. However,RAcc-royalisin did not show antimicrobial activity against tested Gram-negativebacterial and fungal strains. The antibacterial activity of RAcc-royalisinagrees well with the decrease in bacterial cell hydrophobicity, the leakage of260-nm absorbing materials, and the observation by transmission electronmicroscopy, all indicating that RAcc-royalisin induced the disruption anddysfunction of cell walls and membranes. This is the first report detailing the antibacterialmechanism of royalisin against Gram-positive bacteria, and provides insightinto the application of recombinant royalisin in food and pharmaceuticalindustries as an antimicrobial agent.

What did you think about Revive, before you came for your first visit?

To contact us Click HERE
Were you worried about who you might see at the centre, or how to navigate the traffic in Maryhill?

What stopped you from coming to us, and what made you take that step to use the services offered at Revive to help you manage your MS symptoms?  What, or who, do you remember from that first visit?

You'll be used to this by now, as I'm on the look-out for some help! - but this time it's not your money I'm after!!

We're commissioning a short video to help explain what happens at Revive for those people who could benefit from our services, but haven't yet come for a visit.  I have heard from a number of our clients that they had some concerns about using a therapy centre for MS, but that they were glad they made the decision to check us out.

Would you share your stories with me about your first time at Revive, or any barriers you had about coming here in the first place? You can either post a comment here, or email me at Cara@revivemssupport.org.uk.

It would help me to plan what should be in the video, by understanding the kinds of questions and concerns people have when thinking about attending a centre like ours.  That way we can hopefully answer them and   allay some fears and show off how warm and friendly Revive really is.

Thank you in advance for your support with this project. :)

Go Go Glasgow Rocks!

To contact us Click HERE
We at Revive are so excited to be involved in the Glasgow Rocks game on Sunday 14 October!  So much so that our new Interim Chief Executive, Iain Morrison, took some friends along to the Rocks first ever game at the new Emirates Arena.

Here's what he thought of the new arena and seeing his first ever live basketball game!

What were your first impressions of the brand new Emirates Arena, the new home of the Glasgow Rocks?

Spectacular! When you first walk in you're greeted by this lovely big concourse, which just smells 'new'.  There's lots of natural light shining in, and you just get a sense of the immense size of the place - it's BIG!  It's going to be great for the Commonwealth games, as you can see how it will be mutli-functional with the athletics track round the court, and the view, even from the back row, is great!

How did you find the parking for the arena, and what was the catering like?

I found the parking facilities really good, though coming close to game time the traffic was slow.  Some people were parking in Celtic Park carpark across the road to avoid the queues.  I would recommend heading over early to avoid delays.

The one down-side I found was the cost of food and drink at the arena.  A small box of popcorn will set you back £3.50, so that was disappointing!

You've watched basketball on the tv before, but how would you compare that to a live game?

No comparison to tv at all, the atmosphere was great!  You just can't beat a live event!  End to end, the pace of the game was fantastic, and the Rockettes were a definite highlight at break times!

At one point, the Rocks were 10 points ahead and then they started falling behind,  it was only right up to the end when you realised they weren't going to claw it back! Enthralling!

I know that you are a keen football fan and regularly attend live matches, how did this compare to a live football match?

I think that the biggest difference between a live football match and a live basketball game in the UK, is having the passion from 2 sets of fans supporting their own team.  Basketball is still fairly young compared to football, so they're still building up their fan-base.  There were a small band of away supporters, which didn't compare to the Glasgow supporters.  The Rockettes and commentary at the game were great to get you shouting and participating in the game, and that's where the great atmosphere comes from!

To sum up, why should our supporters come along to the game on the 14 October?

There's 3 good reasons why:
  1. To experience the fantastic atmosphere of a live basketball game
  2. to see this amazing new sports venue
  3. to have a great night out in a family-friendly environment
Oh...and to support Revive of course!  For all tickets purchased from Revive, the charity keeps 50% of the ticket cost.  We will also be holding a brilliant raffle, and you can even get your face painted!  To come along and join in the fun, please contact Cara for tickets on 0141 945 3344 or cara@revivemssupport.org.uk.  You can also join the event on our facebook events page! Look forward to seeing you there!

How to Prevent Microbial Food Poisoning Symptoms

To contact us Click HERE

Numerous incidents of food poisoning microorganisms is witnessed worldwide. There are many bacteria that are capable of causing food poisoning. Aureus is a type of bacteria that has the ability to affect humans. Infect the food at the time that food is cooking. The bacterium E. coli cause diarrhea in consumers through eating contaminated food or water. The salmonella bacteria affecting food such as chicken, eggs and meat which in turn cause salmonellosis.

Symptoms:
Since there are many different forms of food poisoning to the body of each person responds differently, it becomes difficult for you to determine which food was causing the infection. Some people may develop various symptoms of microbial food poisoning in half an hour to eat food that has been infected. While there are others who do not develop any obvious symptoms until several days later. Symptoms depend mainly bacteria and also in the body chemistry of the person.

Some of the most common symptoms observed among those affected range from nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, fever, stomach pain, dehydration and exhaustion. These are some of the most common symptoms of food poisoning microorganisms, however, there are other more serious symptoms that can result in paralysis, nervous system damage and even death, if the correct diagnosis is not carried out by a doctor.

What you can do:
There are some basic steps to prevent microbial food poisoning hurt. Remember that food borne diseases can be caused by all foods. Key to wash hands and clean tools and food preparation surfaces thoroughly before, at the time of and after handling raw foods to prevent recontamination. Serving hot food immediately after cooking is also one way that can be used to prevent contaminated food. Also the temperature of the refrigerator should be kept below 40 degrees so that the growth of bacteria and microbes safely avoided.

Be careful and know that newborns, pregnant women and elderly or any other person having a weak immune system are more likely to have food diseases caused by microbial infection. Foods such as meat, fish and other seafood in its raw form should be avoided at all costs. Adequate sanitation measures can ensure timely prevention of food poisoning due to microbial infection.
