AN EMPOWERED SPIRIT - written by: Cathy Chester
Thanksgiving is over and the Christmas season has begun. The anticipation of the holidays can be either exciting or stressful. For some it can be both. Are the holidays a time of great joy for you, or a reminder of a great sadness? Will you be spending time with family and friends, or do you spend the holidays alone?Do you worry endlessly about the many gifts, holiday cards, food preparations, parties and outfits you need to have ready for the season?Anyone that knows me knows one of my favorite movies is “It’s a Wonderful Life.” It’s so “Capraesque.” The first time I saw it I was with my dad during a sleepless night. We kept the lights off in our den, and turned on the television to The Late, Late Show. I remember feeling completely absorbed as soon as the movie began. It was pure magic watching George Bailey have the chance to see how his life touched the lives of others, and to see how their lives would have been different without him. His community of family and friends deeply cared about his well being, and they worked tirelessly to help him in his time of need. It was a perfect movie with a timeless message. It was the Utopia of my dreams.Continue reading

MS Patients' Driving Capability Assessed
To contact us Click HERE
A simple, accurate testing protocol to determine driving fitness in individuals withmultiple sclerosis is the aim of a three-year study at Georgia Health Sciences University.
Dr. Abiodun Akinwuntan, Interim Associate Dean for Research in the GHSU College of Allied Health Sciences, has received a $360,000 grant from the National Multiple Sclerosis Society for phase one of a double-site study. Recruitment is underway for 90 participants at the GHSU Multiple Sclerosis Clinic in Augusta and an equal number at the Andrew C. Carlos MS Institute at the Shepherd Center in Atlanta.
"Multiple sclerosis is a progressive neurological disease that affects the ability to drive. In the early stages, it is possible for some patients to remain safe drivers; however, it is only a matter of time before the disease progresses to a level where driving is unsafe," said Akinwuntan, Associate Professor of Physical Therapy, Neurology and Ophthalmology and Director of the GHSU Driving Simulation Laboratory.
The accident rate for drivers with MS is estimated to be three times higher than that of similarly aged healthy individuals, said Akinwuntan.
In an earlier study, Akinwuntan assessed 50 patients with relapsing-remitting MS, the most common of four types, and determined that just five specific fitness-to-drive tests could predict pass or fail outcomes on a road test with 91 percent accuracy.
Current practices administer 15 to 22 tests that last up to three hours and cost as much as $450. The five psychometric off-road tests can be given in less than 45 minutes for approximately $150.
The new study hopes to validate those findings by including patients with all four types of MS, expanding the number of subjects to 180, and narrowing participation to those who score between 3 and 7 on the Expanded Disability Status Scale.
"Studies have shown that typically those who score below 2.5 are relatively good drivers and those above 7 are not to fit to drive," Akinwuntan said. "So we are concentrating on those people in the middle who are starting to experience deficits that would affect their driving."
A planned second phase of the NMSS study will focus on drivers' training. Running concurrent with phase one is a supplementary study funded by an Extramural Success Award from the GHSU Research Institute to compare driving simulation training with Wii-based exercise training to determine the more effective treatment. Dr. Miriam Cortez-Cooper is co-investigator.

The software development company organised the contest to celebrate their 10th anniversary and invited members of the public to nominate their favourite charity.
After receiving over 400 nominations for different charitable organisations, Mercurytide were delighted to announce Revive MS Support as the winners and they will now receive a website to the value of £10,000.
Cara Doran, of Revive MS Support, told the Paisley Daily Express:
“It is an amazing feeling to have won such a high-profile competition. The staff and trustees at Revive are over the moon. We were jumping about the office when we heard the good news. Thank you so much to everyone from Mercurytide. This prize is so much appreciated.”
Three runner-up charities will each receive a day’s free consultation to help them develop their marketing, social media and search engine optimisation strategies.
Bosses at Mercurytide said the standard of entries was extremely high.

Tamlin Roberts, who is managing director of Mercurytide and was one of the competition judges, visited the Revive MS Support offices to learn more about the charity’s work.
He said: “I was struck by how individual in nature MS is, how it affects different people in different ways and how Revive MS Support have helped MS sufferers get the most from life. I am really pleased that such a worthy cause has won our competition and we can now be a small part of the great work that they do.”
Mercurytide have developed solutions for a wide range of clients, both in the UK and around the world, from the construction industry to the hospitality industry and from small brochure websites to complex management systems and mobile apps.

Floral Markers of Cornflower (Centaurea cyanus) Honey andits Peroxide Antibacterial Activity for an Alternative Treatment of DigitalDermatitisJ Agric Food Chem, 2012 Nov 10Cornflower (Centaurea cyanus) honey can be characterized bya greenish-yellow color and an intensive flavor with a bitter aftertaste. Sincecornflower honey contains only a limited amount of pollen for the verificationof its floral origin, one objective was the characterization of its polyphenoland norisoprenoid content to assign floral markers. Here, lumichrome (18.8 -43.5 mg/kg), 7-carboxylumichrome, (Z/E)-3-oxo-retro-α-ionol, and 3-oxo-α-ionolappeared to be quite suitable for distinguishing cornflower honey from otherunifloral honeys. Additionally, due to its comparably high hydrogen peroxidecontent (0.5 - 0.9 mM/h) and the associated antibacterial activity, cornflowerhoney was used as an alternative treatment of digital dermatitis on an organicdairy farm. Cows affected by this hoof disease often show severe lameness, anda subsequent decline in milk yield and a loss of body condition. The cows'hoofs treated with cornflower honey showed significantly faster healing thanthe control group without any treatment.

Masters Degree OfNursing Management, The Effect of Comprehensive Nursing Care Program on Qualityof Life in Pre-school Children with Hemophilia )Iron and calcium deficiencies are common problems for themajority of the population, worldwide. This is especially true for women whohave recently given birth. Consuming direct iron and calcium supplements are associatedwith a few problems: many consumers have experienced pain while taking ironsupplements, and pure calcium is difficult for the body to absorb. Theadvantage of using bee products to attain these nutrients is that honey iscompletely absorbable by our digestive system. There is no leftover residuethat cannot be absorbed. By adding calcium and iron into honey, which is thenfed to and processed by the bees, it can be directly absorbed efficiently, therefore helping to maintain a good metabolism and proper health. Bees providethe advantage here, as they integrate the supplements into the honey in such away that allows us to absorb the added nutrients much easier. In this presentation we will discuss the result of producingfruit honey, vegetable honey, vitamin honey, mineral honey and calcium honey. All the ingredients used here are designed to help with common nutrientdeficiencies. We will also discuss the method of production in colonies, toensure the majority of what is fed to the bees will be stored as honey, whichcan then be extracted. There are two problems that have arisen when producingthese types of honey: first, the colonies can use this extra food to supplementtheir brood, and store less of the desired nutrients in the honey. The secondproblem is that certain ingredients, especially fruit, are not easy for thebees to digest in large amounts.

A Review of Molecular Mechanisms of the Anti-LeukemicEffects of Phenolic Compounds in Honey
Int. J. Mol. Sci, 2012, 13(11), 15054-15073Abstract: Hematologic malignancies constitute about 9% ofall new cases of cancers as reported via the GLOBOCAN series by InternationalAgency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in 2008. So far, the conventionaltherapeutic and surgical approaches to cancer therapy have not been able tocurtail the rising incidence of cancers, including hematological malignancies, worldwide. The last decade has witnessed great research interest inbiological activities of phenolic compounds that include anticancer,anti-oxidation and anti-inflammation, among other things. A large number ofanticancer agents combat cancer through cell cycle arrest, induction ofapoptosis and differentiation, as well as through inhibition of cell growth andproliferation, or a combination of two or more of these mechanisms. Variousphenolic compounds from different sources have been reported to be promisinganticancer agents by acting through one of these mechanisms. Honey, which has a long history of human consumption bothfor medicinal and nutritional uses, contains a variety of phenolic compoundssuch as flavonoids, phenolic acids, coumarins and tannins. This paper presents a review on the molecular mechanisms ofthe anti-leukemic activity of various phenolic compounds on cell cycle, cellgrowth and proliferation and apoptosis, and it advocates that more studiesshould be conducted to determine the potential role of honey in bothchemoprevention and chemotherapy in leukemia.

Therapeutic Effect of “Shen Fengjing” (a preparation of bee venom) on HerpesZoster at Different Stages in Middle-Aged and Elderly People MIAO Xiao-qing, WU Zhen-hong, DAI Jin-yu, YANG Wen-chao,MIAO Jing(The Apitherapy Institute of Fujian Agri. and ForestryUniversity; Apitherapy Hospital of Fujian; State and Local Joint EngineeringLaboratory of Natural Biotoxi , Fuzhou 350002, China)【Objective】To study the therapeutic effect of “Shen Fengjing” (a preparationof bee venom) on herpes zoster at different stages in middle-aged and elderlypeople, and to discuss its clinical therapeutic mechanism.
【Methods】Herpes zoster at different stages, containing early stage(0 - 2 days), intermediate stage (2 - 10 days) and later stage (10 days later),which was treated with “Shen Fengjing” through scraping. The therapeutic effectwas observed and its clinical therapeutic mechanism was discussed according torelated pathological and pharmacological researches.
【Results】The cure rate for sufferers at early stage was 98.9% aftertreating with“Shen Fengjing” for 1 day. The swelling and pain were disappearedand no sequela existed. The cure rate for sufferers at intermediate stage was76.9%, the constracting of herpes was slow (3 - 30 d), and the pain was distinctlyrelieved. The odynolysis rate for sufferers at later stage was 86.9%. The painof nerve ending primitively disappeared after scraping with “Shen Fengjing” for10 days.
【Conclusions】“ShenFengjing” could cure herpes zoster at different stages in middle-aged andelderly people effectively, and the total effective rate reached 93.9%. Thepathology analysis suggested that the therapeutic mechanism could be resultedfrom the anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects of “Shen Fengjing” and theeffect of melittin, which could inhibit herper virus from adsorbing and damagingcell tissue of human body. Besides, “Shen Fengjing” could also activate bloodcirculation to dissipate blood stasis, and carry away the collectivemetabolites and toxins, so that the nerve root pain and edema were accordingly eliminated.
