Do you know what self-management means when it refers to living with a long-term condition like Multiple Sclerosi? - The Long Term Conditions Alliance Scotland (LTCAS) has defined it as:

  • Self management puts people living with long term conditions in ‘the driving seat’.  It supports and encourages people to access information and to develop skills that will enable them to live their lives on their terms.
  • Self management is not a replacement for services.
  • It’s about working with people who can provide the right support at the right time to enable individuals to choose how they want to live with a long term condition(s).
  • Self management does not mean having to manage alone without support.
  • It enables people to make informed choices about how and when to draw on different kinds of support.
  • Self management is not an individual action, specific treatment or service.  It has to be tailored to each person’s needs, circumstances and wishes. It supports people to live full lives while dealing with the reality of living with a long term condition.
The aim of Self Management Week 2012 (1 - 5 October) is to promote self management throughout Scotland; what it is, how it works in practice and how it benefits those affected by long term conditions.  In previous years the week has successfully raised awareness of self management in general. This year, to tie in with strand two of the 'My Condition, My Terms, My Life' campaign which we will launch during Self Management Week,  there will be a focus on health and social care professionals.

Self Management Week 2012 will highlight work that is happening across the third sector, health and social care in order to raise awareness of self management among professionals working to support those living with long term conditions and highlight how this approach can work in practice.
During Self Management Week, LTCAS will hold The Self Management Awards ceremony 'Celebrating Self Management' at the Scottish Parliament on Thursday 4 October.  These awards highlight and reward good practice in self management. This year's awards will include a new category aimed at NHS Boards.

This year Revive MS Support are planning on putting in an application to the Self Management Awards as the ethos of everything we do is person-centred care and support, focussing on the individual, rather than the condition.  If you have any personal stories or comments you would like to share with us to help with our application, then please contact Cara on 0141 945 3344 or cara@revivemssupport.org.uk, or leave a comment on any of our social media channels below!
